Part 15: Packing and Moving – It’s a Wrap

Joan London - Packing and MovingAs Producers say in TV-Land: “It’s a wrap” as we conclude our posts on packing and moving. Frankly, I’m ready for the wrap.

It’s been nearly a year-long journey of downsizing clothing, collectibles, books, furniture, kitchenware and items of my adult children. This really tough task is about over, and I’m looking forward to moving to senior housing as soon as my condo is sold.

Here’s what I’ve learned along the way from professional organizers, movers and shipping company representatives:

At least seven options exist for transporting items:

Option 1: Drive Vehicle, Have Possessions Shipped

  • Likelihood of damage to your possessions is decreased when you personally maintain control.
  • Driving your car and possessions is conducive to sight-seeing.

  • Driving the vehicle rather than shipping or towing may mean more wear and tear on your vehicle, drivers and passengers.

Option 2:  Drive Vehicle, Tow Trailer With Possessions

  • Decreased likelihood of damage to your possessions if they remain in your direct contact.

  • Towing a heavy trailer places additional strain on your vehicle and stress for the driver.

Option 3: Drive Rental Truck With Possessions, Tow Vehicle

  • Decreased likelihood of damage to your possessions if they remain in your possession.
  • Less wear and tear on the vehicle.

  • Trip may be long and tiring, with threat of theft or vandalism along route.

Option 4: Drive Rental Truck With Possessions; Ship Vehicle

  • Can tow a trailer behind the rental truck to bring additional possessions.
  • Decreased likelihood of damage to your possessions if they remain in your possession.
  • Less wear and tear on the vehicle.

  • Greater chance of vehicle being damaged or scratched.
  • You may arrive at destination before vehicle; prior arrangements must be made for vehicle drop-off.

Option 5: Fly To Destination; Move or Ship Possessions And Vehicle

  • Easier but more expensive.
  • Possessions may be packed in your car, moved or shipped.

  • Increased likelihood of damage to possessions by shipper than by one’s self.
  • Less wear and tear on vehicle, but greater chance vehicle is damaged or scratched.
  • Traveler may reach destination before possessions arrive; personal transportation must be arranged.

Option 6: Sell Old Car and Heavy, Used Items; Professionally Transport Remaining Items; Fly To Destination

  • Purchasing new items at destination may be more cost-effective than moving or shipping old and heavy items.
  • Purchasing new items at destination provides opportunity for updated or new technology for televisions, computers, vehicles and other heavy items.

  • Potentially the most expensive option.

Option 7: Send Small Packages Via U.S. Postal Service

  • The United States Postal Service (USPS) is probably the most affordable shipping option for packages weighing less than two pounds.

  • The USPS tracking of packages or guarantee of delivery dates may not meet the standard of UPS and FedEX.

Which option will I select? I’m not certain. and I would appreciate your input. Please share your opinions with us on our email

Now that I’m poised to move, I plan to shift gears, or should I say, thoughts, and write my “Bucket” to-do list before leaving Baltimore and the East Coast. By the next Joan’s Journey, I plan to select my first five locations. Suggestions are welcome! For ideas, watch the delightful Jack Nicholson/Morgan Freeman movie “Bucket List.” I highly recommend it. You may be surprised at the 10 spots they chose to visit. Until the next post, enjoy the journey day by day.
