We looked at Lake Morton Plaza. It was in a downtown part of Lakeland, and my sister has the tendency to wander around, so the location was a drawback. The staff who accommodated us was very professional and welcoming. The facility was older, it was a hotel converted into a residence, so it looked like an old hotel. The rooms were clean and modern, but when you're in the halls and in the elevator, it looks like an older residence. There were one-bedroom and studio apartments. I think they might have two-bedrooms, but I didn't look at those. They had a dining area with food. They had arts and crafts and different kinds of activities there too.
We like Lake Morton Plaza very much. The apartment we saw was on one of the upper floors. It was a very nice one-bedroom apartment. We were looking at independent living at the current time, but we wanted to be in a position where if it became necessary later on, we could have assisted living without having to leave. They didn't show us the amenities. It was lunchtime when we were there. We saw the people eating, and it appeared well organized. It's a very clean place. We were very happy with it. We just decided not to move for another year or two. We think it's a very fine place. We did not stay for lunch at all. The apartment had a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, and an all-in-one, big, open area, which was fine. The kitchen was well equipped, and it had a full-sized refrigerator; that was the thing that impressed my wife probably the most. For whatever interaction we had with the staff, they were excellent.
We have been to Lake Morton Plaza some time ago, and my siblings were reluctant to place my mother in a building that large. She would have to use an elevator, but my sister is claustrophobic, so that's a dead-end for her. The building is old and there are so many floors, so I don't know how they would do during fire hazards. The staff that I met was nice and forthcoming with information. They're ready to assist.
My mother-in-law moved into Lake Morton Plaza, and I don't have any complaints so far. There are different activities that they have on their schedule for all their residents and the rooms are very large. The breakfast is always good, but lunch goes either way, sometimes it's a hit, and sometimes it's not. The breakfast is over the top, the lunch is the largest meal they serve, and dinner is usually a soup and a sandwich. The staff is very friendly, the rooms are in really good shape, but the elevator needs cosmetic work. They have a beauty shop and my mom has already used it.
