Grand Villa of Dunedin was absolutely wonderful in every way. The staff was great. It was clean, it was fun, and it was fabulous. I have recommended it to other people. The recreation lady was really good. They had a trivia game that they were playing and there was a huge turnout; the people were interacting and having a great time. She was really engaged with the people and that impressed me most. They knew the residents and they knew each other by name. You could tell that they really are out there on the floor and working with people and just making it a nice environment. Even though my schedule didn't work out with their availability, they tried to help me find another local place and even long after that time passed, they checked back to see how we were doing and asked where my mom went and if she was happy. It's very upscale, but it's worth the money. They had a beautiful dining room and the food looked and smelled really good.
We visited Grand Villa with my friend. It had beautiful grounds, and it was very clean inside. They have little apartments, they come down for lunch and dinner, and there all kinds of activities. They have a swimming pool, they have arts and crafts, and they can cook in there if they want to. They have a very nice library, a pond with ducks in it, and a very big patio where people can go out and sit. The staff member who gave the tour was very nice, but got irritated with my friend. She made us uncomfortable, but the other staff members I saw were very polite and were smiling.
When you walk in Grand Villa of Dunedin, it's very beautiful. It was like walking into a hotel. However, when we went to the memory care unit where my grandfather would be, it was very scary to me. It was overwhelming because it smelled very strong of soiled garments and diapers. It was very expensive, and the people who were there looked very lost. They were definitely on the more severe end of the spectrum and that's not really where I felt like my grandfather needed to be. He has dementia, but he was not at that level, and they couldn't accommodate that middle level. It was either fully functioning or super severe. There is no middle ground, that's why we were against that one. They had a beautiful calendar with tons of activities listed. Unfortunately, he wouldn't have qualified for most of them because he would've been in the memory unit. They said that some of the memory care patients could still color and had little crafts, which I didn't get to see, but they showed me the room. It wasn't a bad place; it just didn't suit my needs.
I was interested in the memory care of Grand Villa, but it could use a makeover. I thought the fact that you had to bring your own furniture was ridiculous. The staff member who worked with me had her numbers mixed up two times. It was close to me, though, and the kitchen looked OK.
