I Am A Friend Or Relative Of A Current/Past Resident

I have had a chance to visit with a resident here for over 2 months as well as staying with this person. The housekeeping supervisor Dori, is a nasty person she is like a bull and is very rude and nasty. This woman is confrontational and always gives dirty looks whenever she has a chance. She was head of the kitchen staff but was switched to housekeeping, I assume because she was so abrasive. The housekeeping is spotty and sometimes it is o.k. and other times it is not so good. Dori needs to realize that she represents the company, me and another person I know here would not recommend this residence as a place we would tell our friends to consider.

My dad is moving into Garden Court in less than 6 weeks. We visited many retirement communities before making our selection. And I should add that he lives in Burien, so this was on the bottom of my list when we started the search, simply based on distance from me and his Burien friends. We both like the fact that it is light, open and airy. The staff is *fabulous*! They have been very patient in answering all of our questions and have demonstrated genuine empathy in understanding what a big move this is. They even went so far as to arrange a special "guys dinner - tell your fishing stories", complete with fishing decorations, so that my dad could meet some people before moving in. The facility is *immaculate*. Their cleaning schedule is rigorous. All units are painted, with new carpet and a deep cleaning before a new resident moves in. They have a wide variety of floor plans to choose from. It's a very nice setting with trees in the back, a large patio off of the main dining room and planting beds. The services are very flexible. If a person has a set-back and needs assisted care, s/he can take it for a month, then go back to the regular retirement apartment rate (I should also add that rates increase at a fixed % each year, so it's easy to plan). Residents can stay in the same apartment, regardless of changing needs for increased assistance. It's a quiet location, yet right off of I-5; the banks and stores my dad patronizes in Burien all have near-by locations to Garden Court. We haven't yet looked for a new Dr., but there are several good providers near by. This is a happy place. People are out in the common areas, talking, playing games, doing puzzles. The movie room is great and the mail room is a little center of activity where people see each other and chat. It's a well-designed space. We have not yet met the owner, but the residents we have met like him and say he knows them by name. I believe my dad is going to be happy here. He does, too. And I also know he is going to be safe and well cared for. I look forward to hanging out with him here, and meeting his new friends.

Our mother moved to Garden Court almost 8 years ago when it was very new. It is as lovely now as it was then. The staff are friendly, nurturing and welcoming to residents and their families and provide regular, meaningful and interesting activities for all. When mom has had health issues, GC has been of great assistance and helped us get through challenging times. We are very grateful to GC for providing such a positive and caring living environment for mom.

Staff and care givers all are always respectful, happy, caring and professional whatever your need might be. The common areas are alway immaculate - clean and very well appointed. My mother eats in the dining room three times a day which is her testament to the good food. She also very much like the alternative menu option at each meal. The food servers and kitchen staff are especially patient, courteous and efficient with getting the resident meals to them. Any issues with the food or service are taken seriously by the staff and promptly and gladly rectified. My mother only requires standby for her showers. The care givers are extremely helpful and patient in assisting her wash, dry and apply body lotion. She can always count on them to be close enough to her at all times during the bathing to keep her from falling. Activities offered are varied and abundant. Many more that she can or care to attend. It is so nice to have a "buffet" of wonderful activities each day, each week to choose from. Garden Court gets a 5-star rating from Mother.

Garden Court Retirement Community is the nicest physical facility of the seven that we reviewed in the Everett area, with pleasant surroundings and attentive staff. Very warm and welcoming, with residents generally functioning at a higher level than we witnessed at other facilities. In the growing season, the resident-tended gardens in the back are inviting, and the grounds are attractive and well-kept. The leadership and staff work to provide a stimulating environment which includes physical exercise programs, local tours, movie matinees, visiting entertainers, song fests, happy hour socials, and various other activities which appeal to residents with a wide range of interests and capabilities. Abby, the current activities director, and Peggy, a receptionist, are particularly outstanding staff members. Garden Court is inviting, active, and caring, and we are very happy with this choice for a retirement home for my 95-year old mother, as is she.

The place is clean and neat with all kinds of activities, a real sense of community. The only thing I did not rate a five star was the food, (slightly above average). I looked at nine different retirement communities before selecting Garden Court for my mother. It was important that the location would feel welcoming and warm - I was moving my mother from her home of over 50 years in a much sunnier climate than we have here in Seattle. Garden Court has lovely rooms and the view out her window is full of flowers, greenery, and the open sky. The staff are caring and encouraging to the residents - they smile, joke, help out, and are available - very important for the transition that my sociable mother was making. She knows they care about her and are interested in her as a person. The quality of care has been wonderful, especially since Mom now needs help with medications. This is a new aspect for her and so I appreciate that the care the Assisted Living staff extend to her in helping her with her needs is just as kind and available as the independent living was when she initially moved in. Mom and I are very pleased with this provider!

I will repeat what I said in an article to The Herald newspaper "there's a piece of heaven right here in Everett, WA and it's called Garden Court". Our Mother has been a resident there for almost five (5) years and they have been her happiest since our Dad died in 2000. There is an excellence of care at all staff levels that is above and beyond anything I've seen at other facilities. A clients family are treated with the utmost respect and are kept well apprised of how their loved one is doing at all times. From management headed so flawlessly by Karen Motenko, to the lovely young men and women who serve our loved ones their meals, the staff are exceptional in their dedication to making every day special for their charges and they take that responsibility very seriously. I could probably write a novel about the positive experiences, wonderful meals, terrific parties, special occasions, trips, and outings but that might make this review just a little too lengthy. Suffice it to say you won't necessarily hear harps when you enter it's front portal but don't be surprised if you feel the brush of angel wings on your cheek because they are all around you!!!!!
