Entering Brookdale Highland Lake looks like a nursing home by design. But due to the friendly staff and decoration it feels warm and welcoming. The staff willingly assist the residents with day to day activities. The residents are friendly and enjoys art and crafts. The rooms are small but, suitable for seniors and basic furniture. The doorways are wide for entering with wheelchairs. The bathrooms are functional and have handrails and nice flooring. The courtyard is large and relaxing. The covered porch has wicked chairs with cushion and rocking chairs to socialize or to enjoy the flowers. The meals are average and served resturant-style.

The inside of the facility could be kept up a little better, but the outside does look nice. The faculty could be a little bit more organized. One faculty member left to get me some paperwork and it took them forever to come back. People just seemed to be sitting around with nothing to do. The facility was overall okay, it it was nothing to write home about.

This is an older facility that is in fair condition overall. They do accept Medicaid-pending residents if that is something that is needed (many facilities will not). In the main building they are short-staffed so that people who have higher care needs are unable to get the care that they need in a timely manner. The activities department appeared well established with seasonal events, daily exercise group, and music playing. The best area of this facility in my opinion is the dementia unit which has wonderful staff that personally care for each resident including their likes, dislikes and suitable individual/group activities to keep them engaged.

This is a better than average facility. When I looked at their rates, they are not the most expensive in the area and they are not the least expensive. I would consider their costs as a middle of the road property for this area. The executive director is experienced and seems to care about the residents and their families. The medical care seems adequate and they bring in home health and hospice care when the patient needs additional support. It is in a convenient location, not to far from Major Medical facilities. It is very clean and looks nice on the exterior and the interior is also clean and odor free. I did not try the food. My interactions with staff members was pleasant and the staff answered questions professionally. This facility is part of a large corporation so they have access to quite a few choices in services. The activity calendar seems very full and filled with variety so many items would interest the majority of residents. I would recommend this facility to friends and family to be considered a choice for a loved one.
