I Visited This Facility

I didn't like Applewood Retirement Community. The place wasn't clean, and it looked just old and rundown. We had lunch there and it was very strange because people were assigned seats like children. I asked what if I don't like who they put me with, and she said I would have to deal with it. The whole thing just really turned me off. They need to improve their cleaning, so it doesn't smell bad, and so that you don't see dirt in the corners. They need to update the carpet in the room I was looking at. It was completely flat and it looked over ten years old. They just need to update and improve the façade. I saw a studio and it was the size of a living room. They do beanbag baseball and other activities. The staff during the tour was friendly and open, and the food was OK. They made no effort to introduce me to anybody.

I Am A Current/Past Resident

I came here 3.5 years ago under different ownership. The setting was more mom and pop, laid back, with a few activities to keep us entertained. There is a large core population of folks who you seldom see outside meal hours and those you did see was a fairly small group. Then it was bought out and changes began to make this a more modern and professional place to live. We are over 40 years old and time was taking its toll. New owners began an extensive upgrading - furniture, carpets, outside walkway, etc., which is ongoing. Though we always had good help an attempt is underway to upgrade and improve the quality of housekeeping, cooking and maintenance. Yet, with all of this going on only one small rent increase was put into affect. This home is on LANCASTER DRIVE, one of the busiest streets in OREGON, and is close to several popular restaurants, a gym, the LANCASTER MALL, a grocery store and several others. As the resident population changes over time, the newcomers are getting more involved and the activities have increased to "something for everyone" level: Casino trips, luaus, BBQs, billiards, cards, beanbag baseball, western days, and such. Our beanbag team is one of the top teams in the valley, undefeated since the 2013 country fair. Anyone can play, or just come and watch and cheer on your team. Having served in the military and eaten college dorm chow I can tell you honestly that the food here is second to none. We have had several cooks and are down to the three who really have worked out for us. Chef Adolpho has to be one of the best cooks on the coast - each of his cooked meals are a masterpiece. His chili is to die for. Usually, the food at these kinds of place is the low point, but here it is the high point. The owner is an OREGON STATE grad and experienced in running retirement homes. He manages to make more and more improvements while keeping costs within budget. Plus, he's a very nice and friendly guy. We all feel we can talk to him or phone him whenever we feel the need. Lisa, our beautiful manager, has the difficult job of juggling employees, residents, needs and problems. No matter what and how much is done there will always be one or more soles who cannot seem to be happy. I am sure every home has at least one. Lisa does her best balancing job but it is ongoing, practically a 24/7 job. Her husband has a job away from here but has helped out many, many times for ensure the comfort and safety of our residents. The current housekeeping crew comes to each room weekly, makes the bed, cleans the bathroom, vacuums the carpet, and follows a well laid out plan of cleaning. THe maintenance crew keeps the place running, be it internet connections, water leaks, plugged toilets and what have you. All things considered, rent, location, food, ownership, management, staff, and residents, there is just no place like APPLEWOOD. This is where DOROTHY would live if she could not find her way back to KANSAS from the land of OZ. What more could you ask for?
