I Am A Current/Past Resident

On behalf of two tables, we would like to give a big thanks to the Amsterdam staff who attended to our dining needs during winter storm Jonas on Saturday night and Sunday buffet. They made the effort to get here, pitched in where needed, did what had to be done and then were their usual smiling, friendly and efficient wait staff. We appreciate. Debbie Shichtman

I Am A Friend Or Relative Of A Current/Past Resident

I am the daughter of residents at The Amsterdam. A few years ago, I investigated available retirement communities in order to encourage my parents to move out of their house since I felt that they would have a more enjoyable life if they didn’t have the responsibilities of maintaining it. In addition, I tried to be forward thinking about what the future would hold should one of them get sick or pass away. I did not want either of them to be left living in the house alone. We learned about the Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) model and found The Amsterdam. At first my parents were a bit concerned if they could be happy downsizing from a large house to a smaller space, but with a little encouragement, they finally agreed. They have now been residents of The Amsterdam for over a year and we all agree that our expectations of what their new life would be have been completely exceeded! They have met so many wonderful and interesting people and have made countless new friends. They continue to marvel at the outstanding activities, amenities, and services. Everywhere they go, they are greeted by smiling and sincerely kind employees; from the dining room staff, to the administrative staff, to the facilities maintenance folks, all treat them like family. Unfortunately, my father has recently dealt with some unexpected health issues which have necessitated multiple hospital stays. However, after each hospital discharge, he entered The Tuttle Center for rehabilitation services. What a blessing that this facility is connected physically and administratively to The Amsterdam. He is able to do his rehab and receive nursing care just a short walk and elevator ride away from my mother, who continues to live in their Amsterdam apartment. She is able to spend time with him, eat with him, and enjoy activities with him without having to leave the building. In summary, we are all extremely thankful to The Amsterdam. While my parents are enjoying a rich and rewarding life surrounded by friends, I have the peace of mind knowing that they are well taken care of and very happy. We encourage prospective residents not to be overwhelmed at the prospect of change since we are absolutely certain they will not regret it!

I Am A Current/Past Resident

I found the staff to be friendly .helpful and had a sense that they cared about the well being of the residents. I rated the food as average because this is a relatively new place and they have had a turnover in staff including the chefs and kitchen personnel.

I Am A Current/Past Resident

The Amsterdam at Harborside is a great place for people who want to remain active and meet many new friends. My wife and I have been here since it opened and it keeps getting better. The entry fee, which at first glance seems somewhat high, really isn’t a problem when you consider all the benefits and amenities plus the fact that at least 80% of it will be returned to you if you leave (or to your estate, if that is the case). In the meantime, the activities can keep you as busy as you choose and the food is very good in my opinion. The attached health facilities called The Tuttle Center, which is part of the concept, are a blessing especially since they are available at no extra charge. I know because I have already “sampled” it for a brief period. It is unfortunate that so few people understand the CCRC style. It even has tax advantages. While normally after a few years of retirement the number of our friends starts to dwindle or become less accessible, at The Amsterdam they are there in abundance.
