I Visited This Facility

A friend of mine lives in Sterling Aventura, and I go there to see him. The food is fair, but the employees were nice, helpful, friendly, and sociable. They make sure he takes his medication, do laundry, and clean the apartment once a week. He has a very nice one-bedroom apartment. It's a very nice facility.

I Am A Friend Or Relative Of A Current/Past Resident

We moved our mother into an apartment at Sterling. After being there for over 3 weeks she continues to tell us how pleased and thrilled she is to be there. The staff are wonderfully attentive and she raves about the food. All the activities on offer make for an vibrant and engaged group of residents. We cannot express in words how relieved we are that she is so content and well cared for.

I don't know that a review can fully convey what a safe, caring, professional, happy, and loving atmosphere one finds at The Sterling Aventura. My mom recently passed away and my father made the very difficult decision to relocate 1/2 way across the country to South Florida to be closer to us. I was completely unprepared for the job of finding an assisted living community and all that went into it. Among many other things, Barry Ger handles the leasing at The Sterling, and quite simply he can only be described as a gem. Upon meeting Barry, I immediately felt like I had a new friend, one who would walk me through the process every step of the way...and he did. Barry went so above and beyond the call of duty. He was incredibly accommodating and not only made my father feel welcome, but our entire family felt comfortable at The Sterling. It is obvious that Barry genuinely cares about the residents and their families, and pitches in like a family member to do what needs to be done for the residents. Mary Buchanan, the executive director, is just the same. She bent over backward to make my dad's transition a smooth one. In addition to her total professionalism, Mary always has a friendly smile and a warmth about her that personifies the caring feeling at The Sterling. And, it is the same with all the employees you encounter there from the nurses, the wait staff, the activities director, the concierge, etc. They are all concerned with making sure the residents are happy and well cared for. The food is delicious, also! Truly, it is so good, I'm worried my dad is going to gain too much weight if he isn't careful. The residents will all tell you that this place is the BEST, and to me, that means everything. I hope my dad can stay at The Sterling a long, long, long time! I think the best compliment I can give The Sterling is the fact that every time we go to visit my dad, my 14 year old and I look at each other and say how much we would like to live there! Barry and Mary have really set the bar high there, and the rest of the staff has lived up to the expectations. I have nothing but the best things to say about The Sterling Aventura!

I Am A Friend Or Relative Of A Current/Past Resident

The decision to place my mom in an assisted living facility was heartbreaking. I was her primary caregiver for 2 years prior. However, her Alzheimer’s illness had progressed to the point where it was negatively impacting my emotional state and marriage. I had to do the unthinkable… transition mom to an assisted living facility. I searched and searched and searched for the “right place”. I visited a short list of about 12 facilities that spanned Northern New Jersey (where I live) and South Florida (where most of my relatives live). It wasn’t an easy search because I needed to find THE “right place”. A place that was within our budget and made us feel at home. The Sterling at Aventura was THE “right place” for us. It’s been a year since we transitioned mom, but I remember my first experience at The Sterling like it was yesterday. Barry G. welcomed us with open arms…not welcomed like it was an appointment, but welcomed us like he invited us to his home (and I walked away feeling that it is his home). Barry has a lot of experience in his field and it shows. He answered all of our questions… he made suggestions that proved to be very helpful in terms of dealing with the Medicare system… He connected us with external resources to help us wade through the Medicare paperwork… But more importantly, he made us feel at home. I’m very grateful to Barry for taking his time with us and making me, my brother, my wife and my Aunt feel comfortable with The Sterling. Quality care isn’t cheap! The next hurdle was working through the budget. Mary B, Executive Director, and Barry worked out a plan with us that paved the way for mom’s transition. Our family really appreciates how they went to bat for us in order to gain approval for the plan. I don’t know the full extent of the hoops they jumped through for us, but we are truly grateful for their efforts made on our behalf; they didn’t have to do it, but they did. It’s been a year since mom transitioned to The Sterling. Her mental capacity is limited because of the disease, but she’s comfortable…and that’s all I can ask for at this stage in her life. Mom has a wonderful staff of nurses looking after her. I know firsthand how difficult she can be at times. So to Dorinda and her staff, thank you for caring for my mom, and for going the extra mile with love & patience. Please continue to hire more nurses like Marie-Joseph—she is awesome! I thank God for the 2 years I had with mom…and I thank God for the kind, generous staff at the The Sterling. God bless them! Eric (Son) Maplewood, NJ

I Am A Friend Or Relative Of A Current/Past Resident

My mother-in-law, Luba, who is currently 90, has been a resident at The Sterling for more than three years. She moved there upon the passing of her husband. Alone and somewhat confused, she had to make a difficult adjustment to a new home, new friends, and most profoundly, life without her beloved husband. From our intake interviews with Barry Ger, and our subsequent interactions with the administrative, nursing, food services and housekeeping staffs, we have come to appreciate the staff's genuine concern and support, not only for the resident herself, but her close family as well. Luba certainly has her ups and downs, but she has been able to thrive, despite many challenges, thanks to the support she has received at The Sterling. In particular, Executive Director Mary Buchanan, Head Nurse Dorinda Vazquez, the evening floor medical assistant Virginia, each in their respective roles, have all gone above and beyond in working with Luba and the family to assure that she is happy, healthy, safe and fulfilled. This is a quality operation. You may find places that cost less, but none that will provide the level of caring support that we have experienced at The Sterling. Worth every dollar!

I Am A Current/Past Resident

I am an 89 year old single male, who has been a resident of the Sterling for two and a half years. My points of view are strictly my own and I will try to do my best to describe what I think about the place. I made the decision to come to the Sterling after some very serious losses. I lost my wife, my vision, and had other difficulties within a short period of time. Two month after it all happen, I called my friend Jack who had been living at the Sterling for a few years. During that time Jack and I had met frequently and he always made favorable comments about the Sterling. I asked Jack to make an appointment for me to move in. I met with Barry Ger, the marketing director, a very bright guy, who offered an answer to each of my problems. We had several, very good meetings, and Barry delivered in all his promises. I will say I am a member of a minority of the population, who could be called the group of “the willing”. I welcome the opportunity to move in to the Sterling, as opposed to the majority of the population could be called the “unwilling group”. I would say that the major portion of the success of the Sterling goes to its management group. I can say that Mary Buchanan, the Executive Director, Barry Ger, The Director of Marketing and Cathy Finkelstein the Activities Director, are a group of hard working, “hands on” executives, who do an excellent job of consistently trying to improve the lifestyle and comfort of the residents. Each is totally involved in the operation of the Sterling. I view the Sterling as a form of communal living, rather than the harsh vision of assisted living facilities. I think the strongest talking points are the activities. Its 7 day, round the clock of activities has something to offer to everyone. The highlight of every day is the 3:30 to 4:30 happy hour, which includes some beverages and entertainment. The Happy Hour brings almost the entire population together in a festive setting giving the residents something to look forward to. In the dining room there is open seating. The result is that you get to meet most of the resident. Over this period of time, I found out that a few of the residents had migrated to the Sterling from similar facilities and the common denominator was that the other facilities didn’t offer as many activities as the Sterling does. There was very little for them to do during the day. The management team does its up most to help the residents to become involved as much as possible. Speaking personally, I was thrilled to find, when I came to Sterling, that there is twice a week Texas Holdem poker game, but when I sat to play I found that I couldn’t read the cards. Cathy, on her own, when on the internet, and found “low Vision Playing cards”. A week later she came back to me and said I want to test you. She pulled one of the new decks and started dealing, and sure enough I was able to join the game. This is just one example of the many things that Cathy has done for me and other residents to help out and make us happy. She goes above and beyond for the residents and this is an attitude that is widely held by the management team, to make our lives better. I am very grateful to share my feelings about the Sterling and would like to leave you with a happy though: I tried to find some negatives and I had great difficulty coming up with any. Sincerely, Norman
