I Visited This Facility

I visited Canterbury Gardens. It's an old place, it doesn't have air conditioner, the food is good, and the people are nice, but there's no security. I was a bit afraid to go there. I saw one model room because the room they wanted me to rent had had a fire in it. So they didn't want to show it to me. Most of the people I saw were in wheelchairs or walkers. They just didn't have the right thing for me at the time.

Canterbury was nice and had a lot of construction going on; they had done some nice upgrades -- a new dining room, and a newly renovated apartment. People there were more dynamically involved in their independence. It would be too much activity for mother and was not something she would like. The staff was nice, knowledgeable, and did a good job in asking pertinent questions to give information that would appeal to my mom.

I Visited This Facility

I toured Canterbury Gardens and I was not happy with them. We made an appointment, but when we got there, no one knew that we were coming. The gentleman that made the appointment with us wasn't there, so we stood around for a while before anybody waited on us. The place was very dirty. I looked in one of the offices and there was still tape hanging from a party or something. You could tell it had been hanging there for a long time. We sat in the TV room while we waited and you could see the dirt and grease on the light fixtures. They just need to clean things up. The gentleman did call the next day to apologize for not being there.

The rooms at Canterbury Gardens were kind of plain and dull. The staff was good, but I only met the one person that showed me around. I saw a lot of people sitting out in the front. They had a dining room. Everything was kind of old and the outside could be kept up better. They need to pave their parking area. Despite all this, it's the cheapest place that I found. The hallways and the rooms were clean, it's just really old. Most of the rooms didn't have air-conditioning, but there's a room that had air-conditioning that somebody else had brought in and left there. Most retirement places, in my experience, check on the independent living people and here, they do not. The kitchen counter in the apartment was so tiny that if you wanted to cook anything, you'd have a hard time doing it.

I Am A Friend Or Relative Of A Current/Past Resident

Two of the features that were very appealing about Canterbury Gardens were that it was leased on a monthly basis, so we did not have to sign a yearlong contract, and also that two meals were being provided. The food is sort of basic. It is institutional food and my son is not exactly delighted with it, but at least the food is available. I have a positive impression about the staff. The place appears to be well managed.

Everything at Canterbury Gardens was fine. Even the senior clinic at the University Hospital says that was a good place to put her. We were satisfied with that place but were totally taken aback when they said they wouldn't take her because she was incontinent. They had a game room, snacking area, dining area, and TV area. The dining area looked fine. Everything looked great, neat, and clean. The building was old.

I Am A Friend Or Relative Of A Current/Past Resident

I went with a friend to see if this would be a good place for her, and we both were impressed with the friendly nature of all the employees, from the desk to the admissions personnel. We liked the size of the apartment and LOVED the outdoor pond with the soothing sound of water from the fountain. Nice flower pots with lovely zinnias and comfortable wicker furniture were outside her future apartment, under a cool, shady porch, all overlooking the pond and gazebo. We had a delicious spinich salad with chicken for lunch and the kitchen staff were friendly and accommodating. Pets are allowed and we saw the calendar of activities, which looked varied and interesting. We visited two more times, and my friend just moved in! The facility is older but nice, and that's why I gave a 4 star.

Activities-most residents walk around board all day every day. Facility-very dirty due to being very old and lack of maintenance, grounds are not manicured, all types of pest bed bugs, cockroaches, and mice Food-residents complain of being sick, small proportions, cold,no second helpings of any thing ever is allowed Quality Of Care-they get to whatever a resident needs when they feel like it Staff-some are very nice helpful and caring, others are rude, cold, and have bad attitudes, and are not professional in general Over all I would never put a loved one in this Facility they need a total make over in all departments the corporate company who owns it should be held accountable for the unexceptionable conditions.
