The Groves was our second choice. The rooms were very clean, roomy, and it smelled good, but it seemed a little more sterile. They appeared to have plenty of activities, the people seemed to be moving about from various activity areas, and they seemed content. The menus seemed appetizing and we were pleased with the staff. We were impressed with the facility.

I went through The Groves at Tustin. They only had two one-bedrooms, and everything else was studios and shared rooms. They’re undergoing a major renovation, so it really wasn’t a good time to fairly judge the facility. The rooms were small, the cost was very high, and I did not like the dining room. The staff seemed to be very caring, but it was just a bad impression overall. I found it depressing, but they were undergoing a major renovation.

The people at The Groves of Tustin seemed nice but young, so I was kind of sketchy at first and intimated. I know that younger people are being hired all of the time, but I’d rather talk to a 40- or 50-year-old than someone that’s younger. But the facility was wonderful. There is a salon and classes where my father could work out. I went out there to help my mom make a decision, and The Groves is one of my top choices. They gave me the big activities calendar that does not fully include the Alzheimer’s patients. They have a list of things that the Alzheimer’s and dementia people are getting, which are the same activities but in a separated environment. That was different for me because as a school teacher, I know that the more you expose people to what they should be doing, then they do what they do. That was my only complaint, and the eating area was separate from the Alzheimer’s and the dementia patients. The. dining area reminded me of a Comfort Inn. The staff was all there prepping for dinner. They were very kind and seemed to be knowledgeable. Sometimes they have assigned seating, so you don’t get to choose who you sit by. The one thing about these places that a lot of people don’t take into account is whether or not something is furnished, and that is something that put me off. I had to buy my dad a twin bed and a bureau, and I could get all that stuff really cheap in Wal-Mart, but that’s probably not what he would feel comfortable in. I said, “Oh, I didn’t know that I would have to buy the furnishing for my father.” I talked to a couple of people who were in the hallways, and I was like, “How are you liking this?” And they said, “This is great.” Even though they’ve separated from the dementia unit, the unit has its own outside area, and the fact that pets were allowed was really a good thing because a lot of them have pets. They have muffins and snacks during the day if anyone’s hungry and memory boxes outside of people’s rooms, so that they know where they’re going. I liked the facility; I thought it was perfect. They had great dining options; my dad could have salmon every night.

We visited and loved The Groves of Tustin. I totally wanted my mom to move there, but it was really expensive if you needed a lot of care, and she needed a lot of care. It was close to $10,000 per month. Otherwise, I was very impressed and would have loved to have moved her there. They could improve on the price because they charge for every little thing.
