I Am A Friend Or Relative Of A Current/Past Resident
When you open the door of Adobe House and walk in, the strong, disgusting, pervasive odor of urine & feces may knock you out, especially in the evenings and late nights. Part of the reason is the place is carpeted in most areas, something that makes no sense at all with a highly incontinent population. They have never gotten a handle on the incontinence problems among most of their residents and have been cited. Urine and feces get imbedded in the carpeting and can never be completely free and clear of it. This presents a serious health problem as pathogens, bacteria, and viruses harbor in carpeting. Case in point: In July, 2014, a Norovirus outbreak at Adobe House struck many residents and workers who fell seriously very ill. The administration seriously under-reported the number of people infected, according to several workers at Adobe House. Despite the apologetics of administrative staff, the problem may well have been rooted in the contaminated carpeting. Or it could well have been from infected food and non-washing of hands. This virus spreads very easily and rapidly. True to form, the administration, namely the Executive Director at the time, Kim Haghighi, told people that "someone from outside brought it (the Norovirus) in". This is a lame attempt to disavow responsibility for unsanitary conditions. The place just stinks. I don't know how people work there let alone live there. Actually, I do know that most of the residents, being very elderly, have little or no sense of smell. But the objective conditions are atrocious. Adobe House is way overpriced for what they provide. Average cost is about $5,200/month. The workers have very minimal training and are recruited largely from a banner on the front lawn of Adobe House that reads, in huge red lettering "NOW HIRING!"... as though this is a Taco Bell. To be fair, many of the workers are very nice, decent people, and work hard for minimum wage, very poorly paid for tons of responsibility. People's lives are in their hands! But they do not have nearly the skills of workers in true Skilled Nursing facilities. Nor are there doctors and nurses present around the clock to attend to the needs of the sick. And the residents are all suffering from advanced dementia, alzheimer's, and a host of other physical conditions and disabilities. Most of them should be in Skilled Nursing facilities but for financial and coverage issues. Most have families that pay out of pocket, depleting their life savings for the sake of outrageous profits for the owners. Adobe House is a prime example of what's wrong with this "industry" and illustrates the dire need for greater reform both on a state and federal level. A package of reforms recently signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown make some progress toward improving the conditions of assisted living facilities in California, but we are still very far away from the way it ought to be. The law boosts training requirements for staff and, among other things, increases fines substantially for violations. But the agency responsible for inspections and enforcement of regulations is not up to the task and inspections are few and far between. The owners and administrators who work on behalf of the owners will cut corners on care and training wherever and whenever they can get away with it, all the more reason to take this entire industry out of the hands of for-profit entrepreneurs. Adobe House may look good decoratively but if you check below the surface, you will find thatbthe staff and the facility are just not up to the task of caring for severe cases of dementia, Alzheimer's, and other mental and physical conditions of the elderly.
