Eskaton Monroe Lodge was the first place I toured. It's an older facility, it's very nice, it's six stories, it doesn't have a large landscaped area, and it's right on Freeport Boulevard, so it's slightly noisier than the other places. It's a little more expensive; it's $3,500 a month. They have a nursing staff that can come in at an additional cost so you don't have to move if you have a short-term health problem. They allow pets.
I looked at Eskaton Monroe Lodge. It didn't offer as much as other communities do, and it was more expensive. They didn't provide all of the meals, just one big lunch. If you don't make it in time, they'll give you a bagged lunch with various things in it. The place was very small. The bathroom, the living room, bedrooms, and kitchen area were very small. The staff members were nice and pleasant.
My mother moved into Eskaton a couple of years ago. During that time she enjoyed the company of seniors like herself especially at dinner. At dinner, my normally reclusive mom would shine, and in fact she became known for her infectious laugh. She attended in-house performances, holiday dinners and the chair exercise classes I taught (and still teach) in the beginning just to get her moving. My mother's name was easily called by residents wishing her a good day and encouraging her to do well. My mother held Eskalon residents and staff in very high regard and even though she suffers from dementia continues to ask how Trudy the desk clerk, and "that sweet guy" the handyman with whom she took a photo are doing. She especially enjoyed having dinner with a couple that always made her feel welcomed and was particularly tickled by the gentleman who every evening, held her chair until she was safely seated. Unfortunately, my mother suffered from dementia and her fast deterioration was a very painful journey down hill. It would have been very difficult to make decisions and arrangements for more care without the support and patience of Eskalon staff. My family and I are very grateful.
The administration and staff of this community are both professional and compassionate in their approach to senior living. With their combined experience, knowledge and understanding they not only manage the community well, but are also involved in community efforts to contribute to the needs of the growing senior population. This community is nestled in a mature neighborhood of homes, and walking distance to the local park, and zoo. The building itself is not new, but has been updated and maintained well. The residents were active, engaged and welcoming to guests entering the community.
