Orange County retirement communities residents love it for its distinctive local culture, cultivated thanks to its historical importance on America’s coast. Today, it is home to tens of thousands of Native American and Hispanic people, as well as vibrant communities of every Asian nationality, including the infamous Little Saigon. The ample amount of senior services in the county, including the active non-profit Age Well Senior Services and Senior Care Matters, make moving to OC an easy decision.
Orange County is perhaps best known for two major theme parks: Anaheim’s Disneyland Park, benchmarked by the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle, and Knott’s Berry Farm, an old-fashioned theme park with its own line of jellies and jams. As a result, many seniors in Orange County appreciate being in a county so bustling with tourists from around the world.
For shopping, seniors are often found getting around at the South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, which boasts the title of being the United States’ third-largest mall (and California’s largest) with around 250 retailers. It’s distinguished by its unique attention to contemporary architecture, enhancing the beauty of the city around it.
When the weather cooperates, nothing beats an afternoon of wine tasting in Orange County. Thousands of seniors hop in a car for a day or two and drive across California’s sunny winery roads; Laguna Canyon Winery, The Wine Artist and Forty Vines all rate among the highest of California’s local wineries, serving up merlots and pinot noirs amidst the magnificently verdant backdrop of green fields and blue water.
Seniors may also join any of the few dozen seniors’ associations for a few rounds of pool or golf, pop into an aerobics or dance class, or take up whatever other hobbies are offered locally. But arguably the most popular draw for Orange County seniors is the beach. Laguna Beach is hugely famous, but possibly a bit busy for some people; for a slower pace, Sunset Beach or Seal Beach are ideal for relaxing in the sun on the sand for a perfect tan.
California is renowned for its medical facilities, as dozens of its doctors are internationally respected and sought after. St. Joseph Health Mission Hospital, for example, boasts the county’s only trauma center, headed by the world-renowned Dr. Thomas Shaver. The center offers extensive nurse trauma care, spiritual care and outreach services. Also in Orange County lies the Saddleback Memorial Health Care Center, which specializes in breast cancer, cardiovascular irregularities and women’s health; bundled up by their state-of-the-art electronic medical record system and speedy services, this hospital is an excellent choice for residents in the southern Orange County area.
Transportation in Orange County is easy to use. Intercity buses run throughout every major destination, while the Metrolink rail system runs over 40 trains on a given day across three different railway lines. The county-wide Senior Mobility Program (SMP) services seniors in 17 participating cities, covering much of the county’s senior population, and drives seniors to shopping centers, meals or medical clinics. Seniors with eyesight problems can also take advantage of the private local company “Your Car, Our Driver” for a small fee.
