I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident
I thought Merrill Gardens at Gilroy was just absolutely fabulous. I had no complaints at all. They have many benefits to offer the residents, although my husband was too sick to enjoy any of them. The community itself looked fine, and we were happy with it based on our visit, that's why we put him there.

I visited this facility
Merrill Gardens at Gilroy was an excellent place. We would definitely put our mother in there. The staff was very helpful, very kind, and courteous. We had lunch there, and it was a great experience. The apartments were very well appointed and had everything that I was looking for. They have shopping, Sunday masses, and other communal activities, and she could even get out and walk around the nearby creek. The 1-bedroom had a living area, kitchen, and a bedroom that was off to the side. The food was excellent. It was buffet style plus service so you can order anything. They even had a dessert tray. It was located in the green hillside.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Gilroy
Medicaid in California
Established by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965, Medicaid is the national health coverage program for low-income children, adults, seniors and people with disabilities. It is jointly funded by state and federal governments and administered by each state.
In California, the Medicaid program is known as Medi-Cal. To qualify for coverage, seniors 65 and older need to meet the following income and asset limits:
- Earn no more than $1,242 a month when applying as a single
- Earn no more than $1,682 a month when applying with a spouse
- Own a maximum of $2,000 in countable assets as a single
- Own a maximum of $3,000 in countable assets as a couple
Income from all sources is counted, including pension payments, alimony and investment interest. Assets include cash, bonds and all real estate except the applicant’s principal residence. One vehicle, personal belongings, household furnishings and a non-revocable burial trust are also exempt.
Seniors who are on Supplemental Security Income are automatically covered under Medi-Cal. Seniors with incomes that exceed Medi-Cal limits may qualify for Medi-Cal coverage on a Share of Cost basis. Under a SOC agreement, seniors must pay all of their own medical expenses up to a predetermined limit, at which point Medi-Cal benefits begin.
California Assisted Living Waiver
Seniors who are both Medi-Cal-eligible and need a nursing home level of care may qualify for services through the Assisted Living waiver, a Medi-Cal home and community-based waiver. The ALW helps prevent or delay nursing home placement among low-income seniors by supplementing services in an assisted living setting.
A registered nurse assesses seniors in Gilroy through an area Care Coordination Agency. If approved for the ALW, seniors are responsible for the room-and-board portion of their monthly assisted living costs at an ALW program-participating facility located within Santa Clara County. Additional support services may include medication management, personal care, transportation, homemaker services and physical therapy as prescribed through the ALW assessment.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living
Optional State Supplementation
Seniors 65 and older who collect Supplemental Security Income may be eligible for additional funds for the room-and-board portion of their assisted living costs through the California Optional State Supplementation program.
Under the California OSS, qualified seniors may receive up to a maximum of $1,194.37 in combined SSI/OSS benefits each month or up to $2,388.74 for couples who apply together.

Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly
Medicaid- and Medicare-eligible seniors 55 and older who need a nursing home level of care may qualify for services through the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly. In Santa Clara County, On Lok Lifeways operates the PACE program, which is open to applicants living in specific zip codes within the county.

Senior Center
The city-run Gilroy Senior Center is open to residents 55 and older Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Seniors are invited to join tai chi classes, take guitar lessons or play duplicate bridge. The center also hosts special events such as a Cinco de Mayo luncheon, popcorn and movie days and a monthly Latin American club.

The Mt. Madonna YMCA works in partnership with the city of Gilroy to provide seniors with access to social groups, free blood pressure screening, nutritional programs, tax preparation assistance and free legal and health insurance counseling.
