Record Numbers Receiving Hospice Care

On October 5, 2010, the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization released its annual report, Facts and Figures: Hospice Care in America, which reports on the latest trends in the hospice industry. The report estimates that 41.6 percent of people who died in the U.S. last year were receiving hospice care, a figure which has risen for the past several years (38.8 percent in 2008 and 35 percent in 2007). World Hospice and Palliative Care Day

The report comes just days before World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, which is held on October 9th. The theme for this year’s recognition day is “Share the Care.” The aim of World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is to raise awareness and improve the availability of hospice care, as well as to educate the public about the needs of individuals with life-limiting illnesses.

Other interesting facts from the report include:

  • 1.56 million people received hospice care in 2009, a new record
  • Average length of stay and median length of service remained steady; 69 days and 21.1 days, respectively
  • 95.9% of all patient care days were routine home care days, the most common level of care under hospice
  • Most hospice care (68.8 percent) is provided in the patient’s home, which can be a private home, a nursing home, assisted living facility, personal care home or a loved one’s home.
