Oral History Project Celebrates Older Adults Living Independently

On October 6, 2010, the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, in cooperating with the Office of Long-Term Living, unveiled an oral history project that showcases the accomplishments of 38 older Pennsylvanians who lead inspiring lives of independence and provided great service to the community. The project consists of photographs and stories of people who have received services through the Department of Aging and Office of Long-Term Living, which reflect their participation and contributions to the community as well as their desire to live lives of independence. The purpose of the project is to inspire others to remain active as they age and continue making valuable contributions to the community.

Among the featured individuals are several disabled persons who tell the story of how they became disabled and overcame obstacles in order to continue schooling, go to work, and live beyond their own expectations — and the expectations of society. Others share their determination to remain active and live a fulfilling life long into their elder years.

A few volunteers who participate in department programs are also showcased among the featured 38; others utilize department services to remain in their own homes instead of institutional living. Currently, the department serves 45,000 individuals with disabilities over the age of 60 and an additional 30,000 under the age of 60.

The project — including photos and stories from individuals, will be used in media publications, such as websites, brochures, and state exhibits in order to encourage disabled and older adults to explore all their long-term living options.
