The Baby Boomer generation is unique in many ways, among them, their commitment to leading an active lifestyle well into retirement — if they choose to retire at all. Many Boomers are opting to continue working beyond the standard retirement age of 65. Those who intend to retire don’t plan on leading a sedentary lifestyle. On the contrary, many have plans to travel, golf, or volunteer their time to worthy causes.
Assisted living facilities and other senior living communities, if they want to attract the aging Baby Boomer generation, will have to change to meet the demands of this unique population. The Whittier Daily News addresses the beliefs and perceptions of Baby Boomers in a recent article. For one, Baby Boomers aren’t overly fond of the terms “senior” or “retirement”. We may witness a shift in thinking — is it a retirement community, or an active living community? A senior center, or an active adult center?
Above all, Baby Boomers want choices. They don’t want to be tied down to having dinner at a set time each day. They don’t even want to be tied to a building, preferring the freedom to go out and about as they please. They like the option of in-house group activities, but want the option to pursue their own leisure activities. They’re technologically savvy, and they expect to have internet access.
Senior living communities who are able to adapt to the changing demands of the up-and-coming aging population will be likely to attract residents. In areas where the options for senior living are stifling to Boomers, we may see many members of this generation opting to age in place rather than move into a residential community. Assisted living facilities offering a broad range of activities, choices, and active lifestyle options, such as fitness facilities and opportunities for outings, will be most attractive to the Baby Boomer generation.
