Film Competition Will Highlight Ageism

The Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) has launched a short film competition to build awareness of ageism in America. Rick Grimes, President and CEO of ALFA, says many seniors remain active and productive members of society well into their 80’s and 90’s. Grimes says that ageism, which consists of prejudices and stereotypes against older adults, is unfortunate, because the senior population deserves respect. ALFA logo

Students, professional film makers, and anyone with an interest in film making may submit an entry. Films should be nine minutes or less in length and focus on educating the public about ageism. Winners will receive cash prizes and other awards up to $10,o00. An honorable mention winner will receive a $2,500 cash prize.

A first-prize winner, an exceptional film, will receive a cash prize of $5,000, and the winning film will be showcased at the 2011 ALFA Conference & Expo (April 5-7, 2011, in Orlando, Florida). The first-prize winner will also receive airfare from anywhere in the U.S. to Orlando, Florida to attend the film screening, including two nights at the Gaylord Palms Resort, complimentary registration to the ALFA Conference & Expo, and $300 for travel expenses. Finally, Special Jury Award winner (the grand prize) will receive all of the above plus an additional $5,000 cash prize (for a total of $10,000).

Entries must be received by midnight on February 1, 2011, and winners will be announced on March 4, 2011. For more contest information or contact information for ALFA representatives, visit
