Sun City is located in Maricopa County, Arizona, near the center of the state, within the Phoenix Metropolitan Area. The city is a destination for a lot of retirees and snowbirds, making retirement communities in Sun City in high demand. As of the 2010 census, the population was 37,499. Sun City is actually an unincorporated part of Maricopa County, and it’s an age-restricted community. That means residents must be 19 years of age or older, and at least one member of a household must be 55 or older. The entire city caters to retirees, with lots of clubs, golf courses, and activities for older active adults. Taxes in Sun City are notoriously low, with no sales tax or school tax (as there are no residents under 19, there are no schools), and property taxes that are among the lowest in the nation.
Sun City residents have access to the Olive Branch Senior Center, which is run by Banner Health. The senior center offers hot lunches five days a week and also delivers meals to homebound seniors. Health checks and blood pressure screenings are offered regularly, as well as card games, board games, crafts, exercise programs, food classes, and lectures. Seniors with vision impairment can find individual counseling, group meetings, and rehabilitation services available at the center. The senior center is also host to a Benefits Enrollment Center, which helps seniors and disabled adults to figure out what benefits they qualify for and how to apply for them.
Sun City has more recreational centers than any other retirement community in the country, many of which are managed by Recreation Centers of Sun City. These recreational centers include swimming pools, various sport courts, exercise studios, bowling centers, social halls, and more. There are also open-air amphitheaters for concerts and other performances. For those who love golf, there are eight golf courses around the town, with a total of over 1,100 acres of golf within just a few miles. Sun City also has special interest clubs, over 120 of them chartered through the town, so it is easy to meet people who share your interests in socializing.
Banner Boswell Medical Center has been serving Sun City since 1970. The medical center has been listed as one of the top 50 cardiovascular hospitals in the US in 2014, and as one of the top 100 hospitals in the US in 2013. The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing has designated Boswell Medical Center as a NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Health System Elders) facility, meaning they meet the institute’s rigorous criteria for geriatric care. They also have a nationally certified stroke center, as well as a cancer center. The medical center also offers support groups for Alzheimer’s caregivers, aphasia, breast cancer, Parkinson’s, stroke, and more.
SCAT Dial-A-Ride, operated by the Sun Cities Area Transit System, has been providing reliable transportation services to residents of Sun City retirement communities and other locals and visitors since 1982. Sun City West Foundation also provides an affordable bus service in the area, and for regional transportation, Sun City residents can turn to Valley Metro.
