I Visited This Community
I visited Villa Ocotillo for the first time and as soon as I walked in and looked around I got this depressing feeling in the pit of my stomach. The environment looked dark and gloomy and it looked like a ghost town as no one was at the front desk and there were not any residents in the lobby. My hope started rising as I walked into the dining room and found a bunch of residents in there. I started chatting with a few of the residents and I asked them how they liked Villa Ocotillo, and I received some mixed reviews. One of the men said that it was comfortable enough and that he liked his room. I asked him if he spent time participating in any of the activities, and he replied saying that he played bingo a few times, but other than that he did not enjoy the activities. I noticed on my visit that while Villa Ocotillo offers a variety of activities that they are not as boisterous about promoting an active and social lifestyle as other facilities I have been to. I got the impression that if a resident wanted to watch TV in their apartment all day long, than that would be fine. I didn't get the feeling that the staff would go to that residents' room and encourage them to come and join in the activities. Even if the resident declined, well then at least the staff tried their best. I did not see any staff member encourage any resident to join in any activity the entire time I was visiting. Also, the activities that were going on while I was there only had a couple of residents participating. I would certainly suggest that Villa Ocotillo become more involved in openly promoting a more active lifestyle to the residents. It is great to offer a variety of activities however if only a couple of residents choose to attend, then perhaps the staff are not being as encouraging as they could be in getting the residents to become more active and social. I would hate knowing that my loved one was doing little more than sitting in their apartments all day watching TV, and sadly, I can’t help feeling as if this may be more than a common occurrence in this facility.
