Desert Flower was excellent. I wish we could afford them. The rooms and the staff were excellent. It's a beautiful place. The dining was really nice. The director and everyone I saw were interacting, engaged, and paying attention to the residents. It was a good experience. They had nice, soft music playing that was very calming. They had very clean floors, walls, and tables. Everything was spotless. Their rooms were nice, neat, orderly, and accessible for someone in a wheelchair. They were completely handicap accessible. Their showers were excellent for the elderly. They were able to get in and out of them.
My mom has been in Desert Flower for a little while now. It is clean, it has a slightly more upscale look to it, and it appears comfortable. The regular staff is fine, but there seems to be a communication barrier with the med tech staff. I have doctor's notes for specific times that medication needs to be given, but that is not being followed on a consistent basis. They're doing a good job with the food because they have a very good variety for people in that age group. My mom has never been much of a social person. There are a few things that she is really interested in. They try to get her involved in activities, but most of the time, she is not interested. They have music, bingo, cards, puzzles, and an exercise group. They have monthly activities, like if it is a Mother's Day or Father's Day they do stuff, and they celebrate people's birthdays.
We liked Desert Flower Senior Living. We met with Darren and he was very nice, informative, and easy to get along with. The center was set up like an apartment complex and it was very nice. It was under some renovations, so it will look even nicer once they're all done. The people looked very happy to be there and the staff was very friendly. Overall, we liked it a lot.
Nestled right off the 101 and Shea, Desert Flower is a hidden Gem. Great Nursing and care staff complimented by a beautiful, yet homelike atmosphere AND pet friendly equal a win all around. Parking can be a bit challenging and the outside, while nice, does not portray the gorgeous courtyard, grand dining area, and comfortable surroundings this community offers. While Scottsdale is overflowing with grandly decorated senior communities, that doesn't always equate to a place that feels like home. Too often the children of the seniors get drawn in by new and fancy, but is that where mom or dad feel comfortable? Too often it compensates for misplaced guilt from the entire process and unfortunately can be a unsuccessful move. Desert Flower manages to be welcoming and still shines like a five star hotel. I found the Nursing Director to be down to earth, extremely knowledgeable and she goes above and beyond in every thing I've seen her do. The location is close to shopping and many eateries for families to take their loved one out for a meal and some shopping and the community offers plenty of outings and great activities and has transportation if needed. Add this community to your list and check it out if you are looking for a great home for someone who needs a little help all the way to end stage dementia care or anything in between.
I have visited Desert Flower several times over the years and while the facility is pretty and well-kept and they offer a lifestyle filled with activity and convenience, I have made my concerns known to management several different times only to have those concerns overlooked or, in my opinion, just plain ignored each time. There are several serious issues with management – first, being how they treat the staff members. I have heard members of the management team actually yelling at staff members in front of residents and visitors – which in turn lowers employee morale, leading to unhappy employees which can then lead to sloppy work, poor work ethic, mistakes being made, and poor quality of care. Think about it, when a staff member is yelled at by management that could easily lead to the staff members taking out their bad attitude, frustration, or even anger on the residents. Another issue deals with how promptly maintenance issues are dealt with, which at Desert Flower, is not promptly. One grandson of a resident told me his grandmother had to use one of the main bathrooms for nearly a week because the toilet in her apartment was broken – NEVER OKAY. Desert Flower also has been a facility where I have been informed multiple times of special diet/allergy errors! What?! That should NEVER be an issue. EVER, A pretty facility and full activity calendar doesn't forgive some of the inexcusable situations I have either seen firsthand or have been informed of. I would be weary when visiting Desert Flower,
RUN! Don't walk. Far away from this building. There are too many choices out there. I agree with the last two reviews, all of the positive comments that were posted, just happened to be, all at the same time, had to be written by employees. A friend of mine lived here for almost a year and the care she received here was absolutely horrific. Caregivers didn't know who, what, or when they were suppose to perform care on her. They rarely washed her face or dressed her in clean clothes. Thank goodness her daughter was there morning, noon, and night to assist. They were either extremely late taking her to meals or forgot to take her at all (this happened 3 times to my knowledge). Most of the caregivers had a horrible, negative attitude when anyone approached them asking them a question or wanting them to check on another resident. Almost every time that I had been here, I had to seek out a staff member letting them know that a resident had soiled themselves and needed help. It wasn't like this when she first moved into the community (April 2013). There were no complaints. The care was good, the staff was positive and upbeat, and the residents were well cared for. Then towards the end of her stay at Desert Flower the entire management team was replaced. The Executive Director, the nurses (all of them), caregivers, even the kitchen staff left and the place went downhill fast. The one positive and constant thing that Desert Flower has is Linda, at the front desk. I believe she's been there over 11+ years. She is helpful, caring and loves the residents as if they were her own family. She would go out of her way to help residents and families when they needed anything. I once mentioned that I had to rush home to print out my boarding passing and she immediately pulled up the airline website and printed them there for me, saving me a lot of time. I actually heard that she got in trouble for helping a resident, because she had to leave her desk to do so. SHAME ON YOU MANAGEMENT.
The first few months where good for Mom at Desert Flower, but soon after new ownership brought in new upper and middle management things deteriorated very quickly. The details are too long, so I will just say that medication errors started happening, care plan was not followed resulting in putting my Mom in a potentially very dangerous situation, bad nursing assessments occurred twice resulting in undiagnosed serious bone fractures that where very apparent to me from the pain my mom expressed when I saw her and where confirmed by x-rays and CTs when I insisted they send her to the ER both times. The last undiagnosed fractures resulted in 1 week in the hospital followed by 3 weeks in a nursing home for rehab. My Mom was never quite the same after that. The above and other incidents occurred over a period of just a few months. After the last incident I finally decided to move her for her safety and well being to a facility that took good care of her. I only wish I would have made this decision sooner.
I agree with the last review. All the other reviews must be fake or this place was a much different place a year ago. My dad stayed here for a few months and we had to finally move him after a series of problems including: medication errors, dehydration, no social activity involvement or encouragement, missed meals and loss of weight, Plus, no one really seemed know what they where doing, including the nurses and management. He is now much happier at another place and doing much better I feel bad for anyone who is still staying here and I highly recommend if you have another choice - chose it.
All the other reviews must be phony. I placed my husband here for one week. I filled out all the paper work and detailed his needs, likes and dislikes. It was a nightmare. They never gave him a shower all week. Didn't even wash his face. In fact the two new bars of soap I brought for him were gone. The toothbrush was still in the package. He hadn't brushed his teeth all week. He was not shaved. He was not taken to any activities or movies. They took his meals to his room and left him there all alone. He would call me all hours of day and night pleading "Get me out of this room". I wouldn't put my worst enemy in this place. They are cold, mean and uncaring. I could go on and on but there is not enough room. Go somewhere else.
This community has had a recent change of management that seems to have improved the overall employee moral and energy in the community. The memory care unit is also a lovely place where people still had freedom to safely get fresh air and have roomy, clean, odorless accommodations.
I have visited the memory care unit at Desert Flower several times. Every time I am impressed! The unit always looks nice and clean. The staff is incredible. You can really tell that they care deeply about their residents and do their best to care for them. The unit director, Peggy, is fabulous! She is so kind and does a wonderful job of caring for all of the residents! They're lucky to have her. The residents clearly receive great care.
I have had several friends that lived at Desert Flower in the memory care unit. I visited them frequently. The unit was always clean and the staff provided a loving and calm environment. In spite of their dementia my friends were aware that they were loved and cared for by the staff and this created a sense of contentment for them. During my visits I was consistently aware aware that the unit director was directly involved with residents, family and staff. If and when the time comes, Desert Flower is where I would want to be.
I was currently visiting memory care units in the Phoenix metropolitan area and I was very impressed by Desert Flower. While visiting the facilities I was warmly greeted by the manager Peggy and I immediately felt assured that my family member would feel welcome by her team. Additionally,as I walked around the complex I could really feel and see that these people strive to make the environment as much as a home as possible.
These ratings were given because when I have visited this community it keeps looking better and better. They recently got a new Executive Director and ownership and they have done wonders for the community (new flooring, landscape, etc) they are working hard at making this community the best in the valley and they will. The residents are happy and engaged all over the property. They are playing bridge in the front living room, listening to music in the fireplace room and the dining room is always busy for all 3 meals. I tell all my friends about Desert Flower when they are looking for senior community.
My aunt stated with your facility for only a short time but during that time everyone was wonderful. She seemed very happy and never wanted anything. The staff was always very happy whatever her needs were to help. We wish all the best to this facility.
My Aunt was luckey to have this place look after her in her last days. Everyone was wonderful. WE wish all the employees and new friends the best in this event.
When I visited this building I was met with a very caring staff who respected me and my decisions. The building was very clean and the front entry was very inviting. The manager there was very sweet to us. All of the halls were tidy and all the residents looked very happy and content.
Amazing Staff courteous and always there for any needs. Clean and the best place to live in AZ. Come check out what the best has to offer.
I visited my friend's mother, Elizabeth, here many times. The staff are always very helpful, friendly and above all caring towards the residents. The facility is warm, clean and welcoming; it exudes a feeling of home, not an institutional facility. Whether visiting in her suite or in common areas those feelings of warmth and home were always present. The staff, more like extended family, offered seamless support and availability at all times to maintain this feeling. Although Elizabeth's time here was short (just under a year), that time was as comfortable as one could hope. In her final months the staff truly demonstrated the depth and scope of their compassion. I know it not only brought peace to Elizabeth, but, to the rest of her family as well. It is never easy to make a decision to move a loved one into a facility, but by choosing Desert Flower, it will feel more like moving them into a new home.
The activities, facilities, food, staff, and quality of care are magnanimous. Best senior living in Arizona!
Our mom was in memory care center the last year of her life . The place was always nice with never an odor.
My mom lived there for the last seven months of her life and died one year ago. Desert Flower was wonderful. Staff were very caring and there were lots of great activities -- a luau, Christmas party, and lots of other gatherings. My mother had never been much of a "joiner" of activities after my dad died, but she went to everything there. As her dementia progressed, staff were very patient and kind and right to the end were right there. I still see the staff from time to time.
I love desert flower. It is very well kept and has an extremely uplifting and positive vibe. I would recommend desert flower in a heart beat. I wouldn't choose any other facility for my close friends and loved ones.
The staff is great and the facility is welcoming and clean! It seems organized and well managed. I visited during lunch time and it smelled amazing!
A friend of mine from church actually moved into the Desert Flower community a few months ago and while the change has been hard for him he has had many great things to say about his new home. He says things like, the staff are so kind and his new apartment is perfectly set up. He is really happy there. Although my mother is not ready for the care the Desert Flower community offers I would move her to their care home if I needed them. When I go to visit my friend I sometimes have a meal with him. It is very good food. Again I am thinking that my mom would think that is important and be one of the requirements for where she would want to live. Desert Flower has my vote hands down.
When I was looking for an assisted living facility for my elderly mother, I was suggested to check out Desert Flower in Scottsdale. After touring the facility I knew it would be the perfect place. The staff is accommodating and kind, the facility is clean and welcoming. After having my mother there for almost a year, she is very happy. Thanks DF!
This facility is fantastic! Spend 10 minutes with the director of this facility and you will know how much she cares about her residents. The nurses and staff are exceptional! Always happy and ready to serve!
What a wonderful place! I recently moved my aunt and uncle into this facility and the staff has been phenomonal! They have gone above and beyond since the beginning. My mother was admitted to Desert Flower three years ago for respite care and the experience was outstanding then which is why they were at the top of my list when needing assisted living services for my aunt and uncle. They have been caring, accommodating and are experts at what they do. The facility is very nice, the food is excellent and the care all deserve the five star ratings. During this period I was dealing with a personal crisis and they went out of their way to help facilitate the move and were willing to do anything to make this an easier transition. I would highly recommend Desert Flower to anyone seeking the services of an assisted living facility.
This was the 3rd facility we tried after we no longer could care for my father, and, like the old saying, the 3rd time is a charm. He lived there for the last 3 years of his life, and those years were maximized in spite of his severe dementia. What can I say about the Desert Flower? The facilities are pleasant, clean, and neat. No significant maintenance issues. While there may be newer and prettier facilities there are none cleaner. There are certainly more expensive places. The reason Desert Flower is better is they retain their well-trained and loyal staff, not an easy task in this line of work. Everyone went out of their way (I can't give details, but WAY out of their way) to make things work right for dad. They LIKED and respected my father as an individual in spite of his disabilities. They knew how to deal with his considerable problems and made sure the family was always in the loop. Even though dad passed more than 2 years ago we still visit Desert Flower once or twice a year and try to brighten their Christmas. That's because the Desert Flower IS family.
We recently placed our relatives at Desert Flower and have had nothing but an outstanding experience! This decision and process can be difficultly and arduous and the team at Desert Flower have been INCREDIBLE!! We have already experienced some trying times getting our family members transitioned but the entire staff has been there to help every step of the way with kindness, support and anything that could possibly be needed to make this a positive experience. The facility is very nice, comfortable and inviting. The food is excellent and the entire staff from the Executive Director to the resident poodle have treated all of us like family through the entire process. This team is well qualified and all clearly love what they do!!
The level of care is amazing ... the staff is very friendly and obviously they love the people they are working with. Of all the times I have visited I have never smelled an unattractive odor coming from a resident or the rooms. I found this amazing because that is not my usual experience in these kinds of places. The residents are dressed not just sitting around in robes or pjs strapped in wheelchairs. I have been there during meals and the residents who cannot feed themselves are assisted with patience and the caregiver was engaging them with conversation! The residents seem very content (I am speaking of the dementia unit of the facility since that is the side I visit!) The love that comes from the staff for their charges is evident. I have noticed the director is very engaged with the activity, the staff and residents. She participates fully in their care and her love for them is obvious as she helps them. I have seen her assisting in the clean up after meals, walking residents back to their room, listening with great love to their conversation, being present and not just in her office behind the scenes. She knows each resident personally and they know her ... this begins right away as she creates a personal biography of each resident upon admitting that is posted outside the door to their room. Just reading these will convince you how much care and love is being offered to them from day one! She is the reason the staff is great ... and she makes sure the people she hires will care for the residents as she would like be treated herself. There is great dignity among the residents, which is what is so unusual! I visit often ... at least once a month and the level of care is consistent and loving!!!
i went to visit the facility and i was very impressed with the newly remodled building and landscapping, the residents seemed very happy and my friends mother really enjoys living there. and the staff was very helpful and well informed about the facility and espically Joann Pottle who was a joy to talk to.
I love the location, it's close to shopping centers, eateries, and the hospital. Better yet, the staff is friendly and easy to talk to.
My late father lived at Desert Flower about 6 years. He began in his own apt. and later moved to the Memory Care unit. The manager and staff made his stay there as positive and comfortable as possible. He had had a stroke and suffered from aphasia so he had pronounced communication difficulties. The staff were professional and always seemed to be very patient with him in spite of that. In the early years of his stay, he enjoyed outings very much. Later he wasn't able to participate but that was just a function of his health. My family received a great deal of comfort knowing that my father was being well cared for throughout his final years at Desert Flower. I would certainly recommend the facility.
My mother was a resident at the memory care unit at DesertFlower. Peggy Sanschagrin and her staff could not have been more caring and wonderful to my mother. I never worried that she was in excellent hands when I was not there.I could not be more greatful to the staff.Ellen M
My dad lived at Desert Flower for nearly 4 years. He started with assisted living and was eventually transitioned to the special care unit. His life was so enriched by living at Desert Flower, and the care he received was top notch. There is very little turn-over in staff and everyone who works there truly cares for the residents and their well being. I became quite close with several staff members over the years and they take pride in everything they do. Desert Flower was a Godsend for my dad and me!
Clean, pleasant atmosphere, caring staff. Memory unit staff & care very good. Needs met in timely, compassionate manner. Excellent coordination with family and, as needed, outside service providers including Hospice. Care both parents received in the Memory Care Unit completely went "above & beyond" to meet their needs with dignity & compassion and preserved my sanity as well.
Desert Flower is an amazing facility. The staff is caring, the building is always clean and most important my dad loves it. I couldn't be happier with our decision (after visiting 17 different places) to move dad into Desert Flower. My dad has been there 3 years now and shortly after moving in he said that he wishes he had made to move to Desert Flower sooner.
I went with my friend and her family to visit their grandmother. The facility is beautiful and cleanliness is a must! It's not like any other place I have seen before. The staff is wonderful, nice, and always on top of everything. The best part is you can even have a pet if you like. I have never seen an assisted living home with so many caring people and animals. I had a Great time when I went, I will be going back shortly to see her again!
I have been involved with this community for 7 years and find everything absolutely wonderful! The staff is wonderful and the care is extremely good.
Desert Flower has continued to provide EXCELLENT care for my father. He has lived there for nearly 4 years and he and our family continue to be pleased with his "home." Everyone is so friendly and willing to create a wonderful living environment for seniors. The residents are truly valued as the special people they are. Maybe some day I will become a resident!
Every time i have visited desert flower the residents were always happy. I loved seeing the new landscape and the upgrades in the building. The staff at desert flower is always interacting with the residents and Very friendly with the family members.
My father was a resident of Desert Flower for two and a half years. He received excellent care, and the staff is so compassionate and friendly. It was very reassuring to know he was being so well cared for, and he always shared with me how much he appreciated the kindness of the staff.
Friendly community and caring of residents and staff would choose this as my community for my loved one and would recommend to my friends and co workers.
My parents are residents at Desert Flower. The staff is outstanding. They keep me apprised of everything my parents need or if there are health issues. The 5 stars are the most important to me!! The activities are quite good. I wish there were more for my mom (she is not mobile). It is close to my home, that is one of the reasons we chose Desert Flower. My mom is in Memory Care now. My parents were in assisted living when they moved there 3 years ago. My parents are living together, which was very accommodating- since my parents will celebrate 70 years.
My father is a resident at Desert Flower. Every week when I talk to him he just raves about the food, the weather, and Bingo!! I live out of state, but I do plan to visit this summer and am anxiously awaiting the visit to this beautiful facility. I really appreciate the emails I get from Desert Flower about the activities available to the residents -- living so far away from my father it helps to know what his days are like. I know he is receiving the best care that he needs at this stage of his life. He usually has Sunday dinner at my brother's home in Phoenix and I am told that he is very, very anxious to return to Desert Flower. It's comforting to know that my father is being taken care of by a caring, professional staff.
My dad is a resident as Desert Flower and he LOVES it there. He is on a very high regime of care and Desert Flower does an excellent job in keeping up with his every need. The medical technicians and staff genuinely care about him. Because of Desert Flower's staff, I don't have to worry about him as much as I might have to if he lived somewhere else. I'm many years away from needing a place like Desert Flower, but, when that time comes, I would choose to live there.
We chose Desert Flower as my parents home because of the staff. When we toured the facility I paid special attention to the care givers and was looking for kindness, gentleness, respect and capability. I was happy when I found all of these in the wonderful staff who would be spending so much time with my parents. I wanted them to feel safe, secure and in good caring and loving hands. Surroundings are important too and Desert Flower is a beautiful place to live but too me it was all about the professional caring staff. My father passed away within 5 weeks of them moving in. My mother could have lived independently at that point but did not want to leave and she chose to stay because she had met so many friends (other residents and the caregivers) and felt that Desert Flower was her home. When she returns to Desert Flower after a family outing she is always eager to get back to her apartment. That in itself is comforting. She has now been there 5 years and struggles with her sight and hearing. We moved her to the Kingswood section of Desert Flower as she now needs more one on one care and she is back to attending all activities because of the personal attention she is receiving.
Desert Flower is certainly one of the best facilities. It is a difficult decision to put a loved one into assisted living and a huge adjustment for the person that has to move there. While this place isn't perfect, (no place is)the atmosphere is warm and inviting and the staff is excellent. The people that work at Desert Flower make the difference - and this is ensures the residents are happy and well cared for. The recent renovations are great and there have been positive changes introducing new activities and outings that the residents enjoy.
We appreciate your support!
I love Desert Flower, did from the second I walked in the door. It's always clean and I have seen the same people working there for years. It was perfect for my mom because it isn't too big which made it really easy for her to meet people. And I love that they allow pets. The food is fantastic and my mom eats 3 meals a day now where before she was never eating. So to say I am happy with my decision to move mom to Desert Flower is an understatement.
We appreciate your support!
The wonderful people in the Memory Care unit of Desert Flower take excellent care of my mom who has lots of needs. They are efficient as well as warm and caring to her and make her very happy. I am so very grateful that i could bring her there.
We appreciate your support
This pet-friendly community is located close to shopping & medical facilities. Whenever I have visited, the building is clean, many of the staff have been there for years, and always extend a warm welcome, & you can see that they care about the residents, who seem to be very happy. I've attended numerous special events such as luau's & holiday parties & the food has always been excellent. I would recommend Desert Flower to anyone looking for a place for someone they care about.
We appreciate your support!
I have been to desert flower a few times now and every time has a been a great experience. The building is always neat and clean, the staff is so sweet and caring, and everyone living there's seems so happy and well taken care of. This a great facility. Best in the state. Desert flower in Scottsdale wins my vote over and over again!
