Review by Michele E. - Penrose Senior Care Auditors®
Olive Grove is a 3 story, older facility, but every visible unit has a balcony, which was very appealing. Though older, the landscaping was well maintained, grassy, and perhaps “pet-friendly”, as I observed 2 seniors walking their small dogs. It is adjacent to a large apartment complex and just south of a large park – both easy walking distances for seniors. Flowers and personal home decorations on each balcony gave an indication that residents felt “at home”. There is covered parking. I was able to chat briefly with a resident who has been there seven months, and “loves it”. She stated the staff was very helpful and responsive. She also commented the food was very good, and everything was very clean. She did mention she would like more activities, but spoke about art programs, a recent song group, and the availability of a shuttle as all positive. Based on the above observations only, I would rate this facility four-star.
The facility is situated in a older area but its location makes sense as there are not too many assisted living facilities in that area. The entrance is clean and friendly looking. The receptionist is always on duty. It is a modest facility but really clean. You can tell that somebody takes special efforts to create a good living environment for the residents. There are three restaurant-style meals daily, plus snacks in a beautiful dinning room. Good size portions. The service is also always very good during meals. I have seen many happy faces there every single time when I go for a visit. Social, cultural, and recreational activities take place in a special area and residents do like to participate as I've seen a large number gather for those activities every single time. Scheduled local transportation is offered and that is very helpful for the residents with no family or those who's family aren't able to help them. All interior and exterior maintenance is taken care of promptly so the place looks cared for and comfortable. There is 24-hour staffing on site. It seems like there are enough caregivers and care managers during the week, but it falls short of personnel on weekends. I think they should hire more weekend staff. Wellness and life enrichment programs is a relatively new feature to this facility and they need to work more with the residents to develop this area. Laundry and housekeeping are done daily so it is not hard for residents to be accommodated with those services. There is a full-service beauty salon with great prices that help residents to stay groomed and nice. Apartment amenities are average nothing fancy or out of the ordinary. Plush wall-to-wall carpeting or hardwood floors is a very good feature along with kitchenettes in some units. Residents can make a choice. Every apartment has a good size closet and storage space, private mailboxes, and emergency response system. The community is very well prepared to accommodate any emergency and provide for all levels of care. I think that the community is a great place for this area of town, in fact one of the best. Visit them and do your home work and please keep in mind that comfort and good care doesn't need to come with elegance.
Located off of Indian School Road, smack dab in front of a large gas station, and surrounded by busy apartment buildings it is surprising how generally peaceful this building is on the inside. Although its gone through some freshening, it still remains a bit dark on the inside, but with the friendly residents and attentive staff milling about, it has a bright atmosphere. Home to both independent and assisted living residents enjoying quite roomy apartments, beautiful garden area, and a great dining program. Having gone through various ownership changes over the past few years, it seems to have fallen into capable and caring hands this time around and looks and feels better than ever. The activities are keeping the residents busy and smiling and the care staff does a good job in keeping them healthy. There is no disguising the fact that its is an older property and will never be confused with some of the grander buildings further east into Scottsdale, but it seems to be a great fit considering the area its in and will be a fantastic home for those in that area to stay close to friends and family, and to get the extra help they need as they need it.
My parents have lived at Winslow Court for a little over a month now, and I couldn't be happier with our choice for assisted living for them. I am amazed that the staff always goes the "extra mile" to be accommodating. They have done so much more than one would expect to make the transition to assisted living as easy and pleasant as possible. The food is always excellent, and there are enough activity choices to keep my parents engaged and interested. They have made several nice friends already. The facility is kept clean, but is not posh and snooty - just comfortably worn and homey. I honestly can't think of one complaint, so five stars all around.
I've visited Farrington Court on several occasions and was always greeted by the friendly helpful staff. This facility is for seniors 62 and older offering good sized apartment homes amidst a lively and very active retirement community. The convenient location offers residents access to shopping, movies many outdoor activities, including a golf course less than a mile away.
A big positive is the dining room I believe it is open from 7 am to 7 pm and served restaurant style allowing residents to eat to their liking. This style of dining is great for socialization and is a great benefit to residents. I liked the atmosphere of the dining area.
Oh, let me not forgot all the fun things offered at Farrington trips to Ocean Shores or beautiful Mt Rainier. I like the fitness programs offered stay fit with Zumba or the walking club.
Residents can enjoy bean bag baseball or penny poker and pinochle.
I was amazed at all the fun social and recreational activities there available at Farrington Court. The library is pretty awesome you can get lost in a book and spend an afternoon in the library.
Pets are welcome that is an excellent thing for seniors who are alone.
The apartments are a tad on the small side but do feature full-size kitchens. Hallways in each building are narrow, but this is because the buildings are older. You will find charming decor it is on the traditional side.
It is also nice and gives peace of mind that there is a 24 hour RN that lives on site with two additional LPN's on each of two shifts. There is also emergency pulls in each room this gives added security and peace of mind.
The gardens at Farrington Court are pretty awesome. It is nice that residents have an outdoor area to go and enjoy.
There seems to be great staff retention. The staff is always eager to please the residents are very friendly, and they called residents by their name it was awesome to hear.
I was surprised to read some of the negative comments that have been posted recently. I suppose that whatever business you come in contact with some persons will react either positively or negatively. In my particular case I am responsible for an 88yr old female. She had been at Overlake Terrace a little over 6yrs. She has lived in the assisted living section for about 4 yrs and in memory care for the last 2yrs. During this time there have been issues that I have brought up and the staff has always been receptive to my comments and have made changes or adjustments. I stay in contact with all her care takers and can't say enough positive comments about these workers. There job is difficult to say the least and I appreciate the care that they have given. Memory care is probably one of the most difficult areas to work in. The residents for the most part need assistance with most everything they do from dressing, eating meals, activities, toileting etc. The staff keeps me informed when I visit or if its urgent such as a fall they give me a call and the individuals status. I have nothing but positive comments for the Manager of Memory Care, Lana, and staff, Shabanghi, Violet, Nafisa, Michael, Chi Chi, and a host of others who I come in contact with.
My mother has been living at Overlake Terrace for the past two years. She was previously in the assisted living area and had to move into the memory care area. The staff at Overlake is incredible. In both areas of this community the personnel is exemplary. The directors, nursing staff, care workers, dining room individuals and custodial department are all friendly, efficient, and willing to work with the families to do whatever it takes to make loved ones cared for and supported. When you walk through the front door of Overlake Terrace there is a feeling of comfort and warmth. Also, there always seem to be some kind of activity happening for the residents in both the upstairs area and memory care area. I find it is a privilege to have my mother so well cared for and even loved by many of the staff. Remarkable, dedicated, devoted, caring, supportive, willing to work with the families—you name it and Overlake Terrace deserves an A.
I am disheartened to read the review of May 31, 2013. This is so far from the truth. I know, because I am there every day at Overlake. I tend to be a bit of a control freak and I just like to be with my mother whether she recognizes me or not. I spent 3 years looking at over 50 facilities in Washington, as well as Utah and Nevada. At first, I thought it would be great for my mom to be in a brand new facility. My mother moved into one in Bellevue in 2010 where we saw a 66% increase in charges within the first year. Also, this new facility did not provide organized activities for the first 6 months of operation even though this was part of the overall monthly fee. We moved my mom into Overlake Terrace in 2011 because this was her first choice. She felt more at home with the residents here. I continue to be impressed with the cleanliness and attention to detail at Overlake. Please, do not read too much into the extremely, over-reactive, negative review. My mother, when she could communicate, always said how much she liked being at Overlake Terrace and how kind the staff was to her. If you cannot keep your loved one at home with you, then the next best place for them is at Overlake Terrace.
My family member lives at Overlake Terrace because he is paraplegic and requires assisted living. He has a bright, comfortable apartment with a wheelchair-accessible shower.
He finds the caregivers, the staff, and the other residents friendly. During the week he often has an early dinner in the bright, spacious dining room where he sits with two regular tablemates. I usually join him for Sunday brunch and for holiday meals. He especially enjoys the diversity of his caregivers and finds them prompt, helpful, and capable.
The staff discovered that he plays the guitar and now has him scheduled to lead bi-weekly singalongs both on the main floor and on the memory care floor, which he enjoys.
Both of my parents have lived at Overlake Terrace since 2008. They require less "help" than some of the other residents but that's because they're still together and know how to make things work between them after almost 70 years of being married. They have slowly required a few more care options and it's always done so you'd almost not even notice there's a change in their routine, which is a good thing...it's never intrusive or overwhelming. And the care givers are very nice and friendly. When only one of my parents is left it's a great comfort to know that the other one will be able to stay in a place that they know. They don't get out and socialize because of their health problems, but they could if they wanted to, and that's important. There are many choices and options at Overlake Terrace, whether you take advantage of them or not, so it's like having a custom fit to your life style.
My family chose Overlake Terrace along with my parents two years ago after visiting other facilities as well. My parents are very happy living at Overlake Terrace and we are glad that they are in a safe and comfortable setting. The range of care from Independent Assisted Living to Memory Care and Hospice provides reassurance that they can be well cared for without having to move facilities. My parents have met many nice new people both residents and staff members. Many of the staff show good humor which is very important in working with elderly people. Humor helps to lighten up their day. My parents enjoy socializing with other residents during meals. That is very important for all residents. My rating on the food suggests that help from a nutritionist would be a good addition, but perhaps this already available through the nursing staff. We will inquire. There is a good range of activities for different people to choose from such as music, games of pool, exercising, and movies. My family and I feel very welcome when we stop in to visit. Aging can be difficult, such as giving up driving. However, Overlake Terrace has helped my parents continue to live in their own apartment with services such as van transportation, assistance with medications etc. The bus drivers do a good job getting to know residents and helping them feel independent but also looking out for their safety. Many seniors hold out living on their own as long as possible but they can also be isolated. I am very happy my parents chose Overlake Terrace.
My dad has been living at OT for almost two years now. During my daily visits with him, I have found that the staff genuinely cares about the physical and mental well being of the residents. They are quick to honor requests and never fail to greet both residents and visitors by name. The LPNs on duty are professional, knowledgeable, and quick to both recognize potential health problems and notify the family. Residents can fill their day with scheduled activities from outings to car shows and local fishing ponds to visiting musical groups. I know that while my dad does not participate in all activities, there are usually two or three a week that he tells me about. I, too, visited several assisted living facilities before I chose OT for my dad and, after two years, I still feel that I made the best possible choice for his care, comfort, and safety.
Since more than 8 years ago, I had the need to move my senior parents out of their independent living into assisted living. It was a very critical decision regarding my parents' well being and future course; the expenses also would produce rapid drain of resources for any family. We spent many months visiting and revisiting adult homes, and assisted living facilities with memory care. We chose Overlake Terrace because of the facilities, services, activities, but most of all the staff. We felt from the staff a genuine sense of caring for the residents (and not just putting on a good show for families to earn their business.) This was clear and strong through scheduled and impromptu observations. With this basis of caring, the staff would facilitate if not mandate excellence of care. Years have gone by. Overlake Terrace have gone under ownership and some staff changes, but that fundamental caring culture remains unchanged. We waived temptations of moving my parents to a different facility. My father passed nearly 5 1/2 years ago at Overlake Terrace ; my mother moved from assisted living to Kingswood (their memory care unit). She is approaching 92 and we hope she will continue for many years.
Our family visited several assisted living facilities in the greater Seattle area. It was obvious none provided that special feeling we were looking for. Immediately after walking into Overlake Terrace, everyone in our family knew this was the future home for our Mother. The facility was warm and active with people laughing and enjoying each other's friendship. It felt like one big happy family. What a delight to watch.
Staff members were there to greet and welcome us to Overlake Terrace. As we toured, we were impressed with how the staff interacted with the residents. The staff recalled everyone's name along with directing a brief personal comment to each person. You could tell the staff was engaged in a positive manner with the community at Overlake Terrace.
It was an easy choice for my Mother to make, because she knew, she would be very happy at Overlake Terrace.
My parents moved to Farrington 6 1/2 years ago. We were impressed immediately with the kindness shown to our family by the staff. I was a burdened caregiver and this decision was difficult to make but my mother felt that Farrington had everything they needed for this stage of their life and to help me with my load. My father had been dealing with being left debilitated by a stroke and the staff helped her to keep her and his spirits up during a difficult time. I was glad for the support then and after my fathers death. My mother bloomed and began a new and enjoyable life participating in the the functions provided by Farrington. This is such an important part among so many. From going to in-house games to outings, keep their spirits alive and the people living in the community as well as staff support each other in a way that family are not able to. Sure, my mom has minor complaints such as food related issues (meat toughness and sometimes slow service in dining room) but Farrington does their best to work on any issues related to making things more efficient and comfortable for the residents. The more games and things provided to keep residents busy, keeps them happy and relieves the guilt burden from family members so maybe that might be my suggestion if I have to provide one. My mother told me she hopes she never has to leave Farrington and I as a daughter feel the same way. I can't imagine what things would have been like for my mother if not for Farrington as she can enjoy life at 96 and keeps on "living" everyday with quality. As far as my rating number goes, I always feel there is room for improvement and I am sure Farrington will continue to do that but our overall experience is positive and have recommended them countless times.
My mother stayed here in the past and now we are looking for a retirement community for our relatives from Hamilton, Montana. Based on my mother's past positive experience, we visited again and feel like this is the best choice. The staff is competent and caring. The food is superb, much like a top quality hotel restaurant. They are able to accommodate my uncle who is independent and my aunt who needs some assistance. They offer a wide range of activities. The facility is great, with a welcoming lobby, library, bistro, movie theater, outdoor patios, lawns, and even raised beds for residents who want to continue to grow flowers and vegetables.
I like that all the staff knows your name when you walk in the front door. The building and the grounds are very well kept. I was delighted to be greeted by the resident welcome committee during my tour of the community. I liked the private court yard this has a park like feel with a paved walking path and extensive gardens that follow the path. I like that they have a town car and a shuttle bus available for the seniors to use. I was also very pleased with the options of food choices that are available in the dining room. The one bed room apartment that I looked at was spacious and bright, one of the things I liked best it had a full kitchen. I enjoyed the tour of the community along with the friendly staff and the residents looked very happy and active.
I have had several of my close friends who have moved into Farrington Court and when they needed care the Health & Wellness staff and the Nurse took very good care of my dear friend Arvin. Arvin loved Farrington Court every morning he was up with the roosters making his special cup of Joe, he would check in with Amy at the front desk every morning giving her the berries in his loving way it was a ritual that he loved to do. Every Wednesday we would meet up with Arvin at 7:00AM for our church breakfast and the front desk would great me by name and informs me that Arvin was on his way. As time passed over the next year Arvin’s cancer started taking over and he was afraid that he was going to move. The Farrington Court staff and his family went above and beyond to meet his every wish. Our church was so happy for Arvin and his Family that he would be able to stay at Farrington Court with his friends. The Health and Wellness staff and the Nurse along with Hospice made every day special for my dear Friend Arvin. Arvin enjoyed Farrington Court very much it was at times the highlight of his conversation at church, he enjoyed the fact that he didn’t have to cook or do the dishes. Thank You Farrington Court for taking care of one of my closest friends and for providing him with dignity and respect and for filling his wishes.
The personal touches at Farrington Court are out of this world!!! I first want to start off with they make these handmade Christmas cards that are just out of this world that they send to residents and their families and to top it off they have each staff member sign each and every card, My friend has all those handmade cards for every year she has lived at Farrington Court and it means so much to her, they also have special tree decorations each year with the residents name on them again that personal touch. It brings a smile to my face when I was told about Michelle the Executive Director and Melissa the Health & Wellness Director dressed up like M&M’s and they went to visit resident in hospitals. The staff goes above and beyond to make everyone feel special. I enjoy coming to the building it’s full of fun and energy and they are always doing something new and interesting.
Farrington Court is a lifesaver when it comes to helping a family in crises. Our family was besides ourselves when "Grandpa" could no longer take care of himself. We looked at several communities but just couldn't seem to find one that seemed right. Once we walked into Farrington Courts lobby we knew he felt that this was "home". The community is quaint, cozy, and reminded my grandfather of his roots in Nebraska. Additionally, the dining services are amazing - and Chef Brennan takes pride in making sure the food is nothing less that wonderful! The staff is so gentle, caring, and the activities are bar none. Grandpa keeps so busy and has made so many friends. Our prayers have been answered.
Every time I come into the door of Farrington Court I'm always greeted with a smile and by name, I’m always amazed that the Front Desk staff knows me by name. The events that they put together for the residents and the families is just amazing, a couple of my favorites have been the Oktoberfest with a real German band and the monthly senior pancake breakfast these are no ordinary pancakes these are pancakes that are topped with fresh fruit of your choice, homemade whip topping , warm maple syrup!!! The best part of the breakfast is that’s its free every month. The Chef has a heart of gold, he remembered that my wife has a special Gluten Free diet and he went out of his way to make her a special lunch and tell her about several local Gluten free specialty stores. I also appreciate that they have all day dining so matter what time of day it is we can get a meal in the dining room with our family and friends. The community is always warm and inviting the staff is always friendly.
Dear Senior Homes, I am delighted to have the opportunity to express my highest admiration and respect for Dr. Bishai, and the entire staff at Overlake Terrace.
During the past 8 years, since 2005, I have served Overlake Terrace continually as a vendor. I have visited the community almost every week. During these years I have observed that all of the staff, from the executive, to the reception, to the kitchen and the maintenence always treat everyone in the community with the highest dignity and respect.
Everyone enjoys the same the same joyful courtesey. They treat their residents this way, they treat eachother this way, and they even treat outside vendors like me this way.
As a result, the residents at Overlake Terrace are happy, comfortable, and safe. They always have a number of activities to choose from, and can be seen and heard visiting in the lounges, enjoying eachother like they were in their own homes.
In addition, Overlake Terrace always maintains their building and grounds to the highest standards. Every resident room, and hall, and lounge, and even the parking lots and sidewalks are always perfectly repaired and ready.
I would offer my most enthusiastic recommendation for Overlake Terrace as Senior Home of the Year!
The staff are friendly, courteous and obviously care about the residents. A variety of activities are available for those who want to participate in them. Apartments are spacious and well organized, and are always thoroughly cleaned and well maintained by efficient and friendly staff members. New residents move into fully refurbished apartments. Dining room staff always treat the residents as special guests and desire to satisfy each one with choice of entrees and special requests. Meal choices are prepared well and include all the food groups with an eye towards resident health. I am delighted that my Mother enjoys living at Farrington court.
My experience with assisted living facilities was over the years my husband and I spent over seeing his uncle's care in another state. When my mother needed care my sister and I visited every facility we could find within about a 20 mile radius. We had become very discouraged before we viewed the last place - Overlake Terrace. As soon as we walked in, we knew this was Mom's next home. We moved furniture from her house, bought some new items and when she came home from rehab this is where we brought her. That has been 5 1/2 years ago and she wishes she'd moved here sooner. We have never met a staff member who wasn't wonderful and as a family, we enjoy knowing that Mom lives somewhere she loves.
