The type of care required plays a major role in determining the average monthly cost of care. In Reno, the cost of nursing home care is nearly double that of assisted living. When compared with home health care, assisted living is less expensive as well. This is especially true when taking into account the additional costs associated with remaining in the home, such as rent and general upkeep, which are typically included in the cost of assisted living. The Medicaid Assisted Living Waiver Program offers financial assistance to seniors in Reno and throughout Nevada when they reside in an approved assisted living facility. The program was created to prevent seniors from becoming further institutionalized when they require a nursing level of care and to reduce the load on the state’s nursing care homes. It provides seniors with a variety of services including case management, daily nurse visits, and additional supportive services.
Seniors who wish to participate in the program must be 65 years of age or older and require a nursing level of care. They must also reside in an approved assisted living facility that receives Nevada’s Low-Income Housing Tax Credit. Financial requirements stipulate that seniors may not have a monthly income exceeding $1,396 to be eligible for this waiver. To apply, seniors must contact their local Aging and Disability Services office.
Nevada Home and Community-Based Waiver
The Nevada Home and Community-Based Waiver (HCBW) is a non-Medicaid program that’s provided by the state. It provides nonmedical services to seniors who require additional support to continue living in their home or in an assisted living facility. Services provided under this waiver include personal care and homemaker assistance, adult companion services, respite care and transportation services.
To be eligible for the HCBW, seniors must be aged 65 or older and be at risk of becoming further institutionalized if they don’t receive additional assistance. Financial requirements of this program are subject to change regularly, and as such, it’s requested that seniors who are interested in applying for the program contact their local Aging and Disability Services office to discuss.
Nevada Community Options Program for the Elderly
Similar to the HCBW, the Nevada Community Options Program for the Elderly (COPE) is in place to provide additional nonmedical support to seniors who require a nursing level of care yet wish to continue living in their home or in an assisted living facility. Services included in this program depend on the level of care the senior requires.
To be eligible for COPE, seniors must be 65 years of age and require a nursing level of care. Financial eligibility requirements change frequently and as such, seniors should contact their local Aging and Disability Services office for up-to-date information.
Optional State Supplement
While government assistance programs such as Medicaid provide assistance with the cost of care in assisted living facilities, they don’t typically cover room and board expenses. Seniors who require assistance with these costs can apply for Nevada’s Optional State Supplement(OSS), which can provide seniors with cash to pay for such expenses.
The benefit is calculated based on the senior’s needs and current income. Applicants must be currently receiving federal Supplemental Security Income payments and reside in a facility that is licensed for domiciliary care. To apply, seniors can contact the U.S. Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213.
Long-Term Care Insurance
Older adults who wish to be prepared for the possibility of long-term care in their future can purchase a long-term care insurance policy, which covers the cost of residing in an assisted living facility or nursing care home. The cost of this insurance varies drastically based on the provider, coverage and the age and health of the policyholder, as does eligibility and deductible.
Elderlife Bridge Loan
Elderlife Financial Services provides seniors who cannot receive Medicaid or other government financial assistance with another option. Elderlife bridge loans pay the cost of assisted living by issuing funds on the senior’s behalf directly to the facility where they reside. Seniors are required to pay the loan back in full by making monthly installments; however, interest rates are low and terms are flexible.
Eligibility is dependent on credit history and income, but seniors who are unable to obtain approval on their own may have up to six cosigners apply with them, which can increase the chances of approval.
Senior centers are a gathering place for elderly residents of the city. They often provide a variety of programming and services including fitness classes, social activities, day trips and congregate meals.
