Community Care for the Aged and Disabled

Community Care for the Aged and Disabled is a program that’s provided by the state separately from the Medicaid system. It helps senior citizens aged 60 and older access care services when they’re ineligible for Medicaid. While it’s a program that’s meant to help seniors who want to continue living at home, it does help some seniors access care in assisted living facilities.

To qualify for CCAD, applicants need to be at least 60 years old and require daily care. Their income must not exceed $2,250 per month, and they’re limited to owning $5,000 in countable assets.

Optional State Supplement

Aged, blind and disabled individuals who receive Supplemental Security Income are typically automatically enrolled in the state’s Optional State Supplement benefit program. The benefit is paid in cash each month and is meant to help its recipients pay for costs that aren’t covered by Medicaid or other assistance programs, such as room and board. The amount each beneficiary receives is based on their income and needs.

Seniors who wish to inquire about the OSS can call the Texas Department of Health and Human Services at 1-855-937-2372.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Seniors who have policies usually pay a small deductible each year while the insurance provider pays the remainder of the cost. Terms of each long-term care insurance plan vary depending on the provider. Typically, a policy needs to be purchased before the policyholder is in need of long-term care. Costs are normally calculated based on the person’s age, location and previous health conditions.

Seniors who need unbiased help filing a long-term care insurance claim or would like help understanding their policy can contact Elderlife Financial Services, which provides insurance advocacy service and claims services to senior citizens. The company can be contacted via telephone at (888) 222-4500.
